Ken Sugimori is the lead Art Director and Designer of the Pokemon franchise. He drew all 150 original Pokemon characters. Sugimori directed a team of 17 people in designing new characters for the games, though he always drew the final designs. He drew much of his inspiration from observing animals in aquariums and zoos
When he begins a new character, his process normally involves making a rough sketch, then tracing it on to film paper while polishing it and making the illustration more professional looking. After that, he draws the character many times, changing its proportions until he is satisfied.

His style of art making is called Manga, which is a Japanese comic book style.

The difference between Manga and Anime:
Manga=Comic Books

Art from Another Culture
Learning Goal: I can describe the similarities and differences in artworks from cultural examples.
The art of Henna making originated in India.
Henna is made from a plant.
The Leaves are crushed and mixed with water to make a paste.
The paste is placed in a tube and squeezed in order to paint patterns on your skin.
The patterns can last up to 2 weeks!
Henna art is an important tradition that has lasted for thousands of years throughout India and Middle Eastern cultures. Receiving Henna is believed to bring good luck, beauty, and joy. Henna is mostly used for special occasions or celebrations.

Extended Learning:  Henna or Mehndi is not the only type of art that is important to the Indian culture.  Another type of art we can learn about is creating mandalas.
A mandala is meant to represent "the universe."  Mandalas are created by repeating geometric and organic shapes in a circular pattern.

You may use the following instructions to create a mandala of your own.

Value Landscapes

Vincent Van Gogh painted "Starry Night" in 1889 from his hospital room.
Although the series depicts various times of day and night and different weather conditions, all the works include the line of rolling hills in the distance.

The artist considered "The Starry Night," which one day would rank among his most famous works, to be a failure
Physicist Jose Luis Aragon compared the turbulent play of light and dark in such works as "Starry Night" to the mathematical expression of turbulence in such natural occurrences as as whirlpools and air streams. He found they matched very closely.
The colors & lines of movement create luminescence.
Research has confirmed that the dominant morning star in the painting is actually Venus, which was in a similar position at the time Van Gogh was working on "Starry Night," and it would have shone brightly, just as Van Gogh painted it.

Chinese Ming Vase

1) Paint the background of your artome paper using tempera cakes.  Use either a warm or cool color scheme in order to express your mood.  You may also choose to paint a solid color background if you want to keep the focus on your vase designs.

2) Watch the tutorial for creating your own vase out of paper.

Look through this slideshow for inspiration before drawing your own design on your vase.  There are also LOTS of drawing resources in your resource bin.

Draw your designs with pencil.  Trace with blue sharpie, and add details with blue colored pencil or crayon.

3)  Mini Lesson:  Use the force that is created when pushing air onto your paper in order to paint cherry blossom branches!  Experiment with other forces, such as gravity.  Mrs. Hipps will be teaching a mini lesson during the second and third day of this project.  You only need to plan on attending once.
***You must have your vase cut out and your background painted before attending this mini lesson.  Remember art is a process; we have to follow the steps in order if we want to create our best work!

4) Finish all of your vase designs and wait for your paint to dry.  Then, collage your vase onto your background.  Paint your cherry blossoms and add any final details. :)

MOVEMENT: Using art elements to direct a viewer's eye along a path through the artwork, and/or to show movement, action and direction.
In a still picture such as a painting or photograph, where nothing is actually moving, various strategies can be used to give the viewer a sense of movement and speed, or to move the viewer's eye through the work.

Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point.

1. Come Explore Africa!

2. Take a Closer Look at the African Savanna

Africa is one of the most beautiful places to visit.

Africa is primarily a dry habitat called a savannah. A savannah is a grassland ecosystem made up of small, widely spaced trees with a canopy that does not close providing enough light to create a grassy base for animals to munch on or hide in.
